"Eat Vomited Food Again"... Couple Habitually Abusing Children for 10 Years
Father's Sentence Reduced to 10 Months Imprisonment with 2 Years Probation on Appeal
Court Considers "Change in Parenting Attitude Through Counseling"
A father who habitually abused and neglected his children for over 10 years received a reduced sentence in the appellate court.
On the 15th, the Criminal Division 1 of Gwangju District Court (Presiding Judge Kim Pyeong-ho) announced that it overturned the original verdict and reduced the sentence to 10 months in prison with a 2-year probation for father A (53), who was charged with child abuse. A was originally sentenced to 10 months in prison in the first trial.
A, the father of twin daughters, remarried B in 2007 and raised another daughter together. A was tried for physically and mentally abusing three daughters, who were between 6 and 17 years old at the time of the incidents, on seven occasions from 2010 to 2021.
In around 2010, A threatened his then 6-year-old daughter, who bit her nails, by saying he would "cut off her fingers," and repeatedly slapped her face with his palm because she did not share food with her younger sibling. He habitually assaulted all three daughters.
B also participated in the abuse, mainly targeting the twin daughters who were not her biological children. When the twins were 6 years old, B forced them to eat mushrooms, which made them vomit, and then made them eat the vomited food again.
The first trial court sentenced A to 10 months in prison and ordered his detention, while B, who was also charged, was sentenced to 8 months in prison with a 2-year probation. Afterwards, only A filed an appeal.

Regarding the sentencing, the court explained, "Considering that A admitted all charges and showed remorse, served 4 months in detention, made efforts to change his parenting attitude through continuous counseling, and is a first-time offender, the sentence is reduced to probation."
