Verbal Abuse for Riding Bicycle Car on Subway... Identifying Suspect Underway
Amid controversy over an incident in which a man verbally abused an elderly woman who boarded the bicycle car of a subway train, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced its plan to conduct a thorough investigation.
According to the Ministry on the 15th, the incident occurred around 6 p.m. on the 9th on the Gyeongui-Jungang Line train running between Seoul Oksu and Hannam stations. In the released video, a middle-aged man verbally abuses the elderly woman, saying, "You should just stay still and go, why do you talk so much?"
Regarding this, the Ministry stated, "The unidentified male suspect is accused of threatening and verbally abusing the female victim because she boarded the electric train’s bicycle car."

Currently, railway police are working to identify the suspect through analysis of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage. The Ministry plans to review the applicability of charges such as intimidation under the Criminal Act and violation of prohibited acts on passenger trains under the Railway Safety Act (such as causing harm to others while intoxicated). Additionally, the Ministry will examine the appropriateness of the Korea Railroad Corporation’s response to the incident, including the report reception and on-site dispatch, and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority will investigate possible violations of railway safety management system maintenance obligations related to the incident.
