This Chuseok, it was found that 6 out of 10 people do not perform the ancestral rites. Among 10 people, 8 do not change their existing plans despite the designation of October 2 as a temporary holiday. The main plans were visiting hometown or parents' house, resting, and traveling, in that order.
Lotte Members announced on the 13th that in a survey of 4,000 consumers aged 20 to 50 and above, more respondents said they would not perform the Chuseok ancestral rites (56.4%) than those who said they would (43.7%).
46.0% of respondents said they plan to visit their hometown, parents' house, or relatives' homes. Those who said they would rest at home accounted for a significant 30.0%. Those planning to travel accounted for 22.4% (domestic 13.6%, overseas 8.7%).
The most common response regarding the length of the Chuseok holiday was 6 days off, at 44.1%. This was followed by 5 days (18.5%), 4 days (10.5%), 3 days (8.3%), 7 days or more (7.9%), 10 days or more (4.0%), 2 days (3.5%), and 1 day (3.3%).
When asked whether their Chuseok holiday plans changed due to the designation of October 2 as a temporary holiday, 76.3% of respondents answered that their plans would not change.
Among about 760 respondents who said they have travel plans during the Chuseok holiday, an additional survey revealed that the average domestic travel duration is 3.4 days, and the average overseas travel duration is 5.3 days. The most popular domestic travel destinations for this Chuseok (multiple answers allowed) were Gyeongsang Province (21.7%), Gangwon Province (20.0%), Jeju Island (17.8%), Gyeonggi Province (17.2%), Jeolla Province (15.9%), and Chungcheong Province (13.7%).
The top overseas travel destination was Japan (15.8%), followed by the United States and Canada (13.4%), Western Europe (10.4%), Eastern Europe (9.4%), Vietnam (9.1%), and Thailand (8.4%), which were also popular.
Regarding travel companions during Chuseok (multiple answers allowed), spouses or partners were the most frequently chosen at 34.0%. Since it is a holiday period, many plan family trips with not only spouses but also parents (20.3%), children (19.5%), and spouses' parents (9.3%). Men were slightly more likely to travel with children (21.0%) than parents (18.6%), while women were more likely to travel with parents (22.4%) than children (17.6%).
Other respondents planned to travel with friends or acquaintances (13.6%) or colleagues and school seniors/juniors (5.6%). Some also said they would travel alone (9.9%) or with travel community members (6.5%).
Kim Geun-su, head of the Data Business Division at Lotte Members, said, "Despite the long holiday, many seem to prefer resting at home considering inflation and traffic congestion. Except for those who planned in advance, there is unlikely to be a sudden surge in travel demand. Instead, crowds are expected to gather in urban movie theaters, shopping malls, amusement parks, and nearby outing spots."
This survey was conducted through Lotte Members' own research platform Lime from the 4th to the 5th of this month (sampling error ±1.55 percentage points at a 95% confidence level).
