Gwangju Dong-gu, the Grand 'Memory Garden' Unfolding at Geumnam-ro
Everyone has their own memories cherished deep in their hearts.
The magic of turning personal memories into a vast Memory Garden unfolds right in the heart of Geumnam-ro, Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City. This happens through the ‘20th Gwangju Chungjang Festival of Memories’ Memory Garden.
According to Dong-gu on the 12th, the ‘Memory Garden’ program will be held from October 5 to 9 during the Chungjang Festival, allowing any citizen to participate in the area from Geumnam-ro 1-ga to 3-ga.
Each participant writes down their cherished memories on candles, completing monuments in four zones themed around ‘Joy (喜), Anger (怒), Love (愛), and Pleasure (樂).’
Participants write their memories on stickers and attach them to the monuments, while students from Chosun University College of Fine Arts use the streets of Geumnam-ro as a canvas to leave preliminary sketches.
The plan is to gather citizens’ memories to complete a grand Memory Garden.
In particular, Geumnam-ro, where the Memory Garden unfolds, is also a space that offers programs for citizens to participate in together and provides healing.
It is designed not just to view the monuments set up in the Memory Garden, but from the perspective of Installation Art, which integrates artworks with the surrounding space.
Around the Memory Garden, there will be a tricycle racing competition, nostalgic roller skating rink, balloon-popping game, giant jump rope, 3-on-3 basketball tournament, and spaces for Go, Janggi (Korean chess), and chess, providing enjoyment.
The Flour Play performance, conducted by the Memory Wanderers and Mollikkun, involves all citizens and becomes the pinnacle of play where people forget their daily lives and enjoy memories.
Additionally, starting at 9 PM on October 5, the ‘Campfire Program’ will take place on Geumnam-ro Boulevard.
