Kim Dong-gwan: "Hanwha Ocean to Continue Leading Future Marine Market with Ongoing Investment"
Eco-friendly Technology Shining at GasTech
On the 5th (local time), 'Gastech 2023,' the most prestigious exhibition related to eco-friendly ships and energy, was held in Singapore. Many shipbuilding and marine companies participated, among which Hanwha Ocean attracted attention by showcasing the world's best eco-friendly technology at this exhibition. Kim Dong-kwan, Vice Chairman of Hanwha, who visited the exhibition hall, also expressed his commitment, saying, "We will continue to invest in solutions to lead the future marine market."

The exterior, featuring two large cylindrical pillars installed at the front of the ship, caught the eye. This is the 'Rotor Sail' developed by Hanwha Ocean. It is a device that secures the power needed to propel the ship by rotating the pillars using the wind blowing on the moving ship. The Rotor Sail is recognized as a representative eco-friendly technology and one of the alternatives to ship carbon emission regulations. It offers high propulsion power relative to its size, is easy to install, and simple to maintain.
Hanwha Ocean is accelerating technology development by establishing the world's first demonstration center. A Hanwha Ocean official explained, "When applying the Rotor Sail to a ship, it can achieve fuel savings of more than 5% based on the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), which is an energy-saving evaluation standard presented by the International Maritime Organization. Fuel savings of up to nearly 10% can also be expected."
In addition, Hanwha Ocean attracted visitors' attention by exhibiting ammonia-powered ammonia carriers, liquefied carbon dioxide carriers, and the floating LNG production, storage, and offloading complex facility 'LNG-FPSO.'
Hanwha Ocean obtained the basic certification for an ammonia-powered LNG carrier equipped with an exhaust gas heat recovery power generation system at "Gastech 2023," held in Singapore on the 5th (local time). Notably, Hanwha Ocean is the first in the world to develop a large LNG carrier that emits no carbon gas at all.
The 174,000㎥ LNG carrier, which received the zero-carbon LNG carrier basic certification, can use ammonia and natural gas either separately or simultaneously as fuel. When using only ammonia, no carbon gas is emitted. Even when mixing ammonia and natural gas, all naturally vaporized natural gas generated in the cargo tanks is used as fuel, improving fuel efficiency.
Vice Chairman Kim Dong-kwan also attended the exhibition on the 7th, meeting with executives of global energy companies to discuss business cooperation and providing both material and moral support to Hanwha Ocean. A Hanwha Ocean official said, "We plan to invest about 600 billion KRW to develop eco-friendly propulsion systems based on ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen, and also to develop ammonia, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen carriers. We aim to secure leadership in the future marine market."
