First Female Director-General of Policy Planning Appointed at Ministry of Unification... "As Part of Personnel Reform"
Hwang Jeong-ju Appointed as Director of Planning and Coordination Office
The Ministry of Unification has appointed Hwang Jeong-ju (58), Head of the Planning Department at the Inter-Korean Dialogue Headquarters, as the Director General of the Planning and Coordination Office.
Director General Hwang is the first female Director General since the establishment of the Ministry of Unification, and the second female at the 1st grade level (Senior Executive Service Grade A) after Yoon Mi-ryang, who served as Director of the North Korean Defector Settlement Support Office (Hana Center) in 2009. She is the first non-civil service female to be promoted to the 1st grade level.
On the 8th, the Ministry of Unification explained, "This regular personnel reshuffle aligned with the organizational restructuring focused on placing personnel appropriately within the reorganized structure and carried out a personnel renewal."
Director General Hwang, who joined the Ministry of Unification in 1988 as a Level 6 Special Appointment, has held key positions including Inter-Korean Dialogue, Unification Policy, North Korean Situation Analysis, and Unification Education, and has also served as Senior Specialist and Full-time Negotiator at the Inter-Korean Dialogue Headquarters.
Minister of Unification Kim Young-ho said regarding this personnel change, "It is an attempt to show the Ministry of Unification's effort to change," and added, "We will continue to remove barriers such as educational background and gender, prioritize competence as the foremost criterion, and actively nurture and utilize talent."

The Ministry of Unification transferred former Director General of Planning and Coordination Kang Jong-seok to Director of the Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs Office. Kim Byung-dae, Director General of the Unification Policy Office, remains in his position.
