"Be Careful with Fire During Chuseok"... September Sees Highest Number of Cooking Fires Involving Food Waste Year-Round
Over the past five years, September has been the month with the highest number of fires caused by food cooking in Seoul.
The Seoul Fire and Disaster Headquarters announced on the 8th that, based on an analysis of fires that occurred from 2018 to 2022, a total of 2,114 fires occurred in September over the five years, accounting for 7.6% of all fires. There were a total of 119 casualties, including 15 deaths.
Looking at the detailed causes, fires caused by food cooking occurred most frequently in September, with 525 cases throughout the year. This is believed to be mainly due to fires starting while preparing holiday foods for Chuseok.
During the five years, the number of 119 emergency dispatches related to safety accidents in September totaled 77,764. Dispatches for safety measures due to natural disasters were 2,715 cases, the second highest of the year after January.

Lee Woong-gi, head of the on-site response team at the Seoul Fire and Disaster Headquarters, said, "September, when autumn begins, sees an increase in large and small fires and safety accidents around the Chuseok holiday." He requested, "Please pay attention to disaster safety and be cautious for the safety of your family and neighbors."
