DA Technology, Hyundai Motor-LG Energy Solution's Indonesian Battery Plant Equipment Testing 'Smooth Sailing'
DA Technology announced on the 7th that the pilot test of battery cell manufacturing equipment for the Hyundai Motor-LG Energy Solution joint venture plant in Indonesia has entered its final stage.
Since July, DA Technology has been conducting quality certification tests, productivity, and stability verification through trial operation of secondary battery assembly process equipment. The company plans to complete the final test by the end of this year and start normal operation as early as the beginning of next year.
Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution broke ground on the Indonesia battery cell joint venture plant in September 2021. It is being constructed on a total site of 330,000㎡ (approximately 100,000 pyeong) in the Karawang Industrial Complex near Jakarta. This plant will be capable of producing 10 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electric vehicle batteries annually, which is enough for 200,000 electric vehicles.
DA Technology secured an order worth 53 billion KRW for secondary battery assembly process equipment for Indonesia in the second half of last year. Starting with the first shipment of secondary battery notching-stacking equipment in March this year, the company completed equipment shipments in four rounds. Currently, the company has dispatched about 150 employees to Indonesia to carry out equipment installation and pilot testing to prepare for normal operation.
Industry insiders predict that the Hyundai Motor-LG Energy Solution Indonesia electric vehicle battery joint venture plant will begin production in February next year. It is expected to mass-produce high-performance battery cells to be installed in Hyundai and Kia electric vehicles and target the ASEAN market.
According to Indonesian media, Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Investment, stated at the '2023 ASEAN Investment Forum' that “The LG battery plant is scheduled to start production in February next year, and the initial plan is to produce roughly 160,000 to 200,000 electric vehicles' worth of batteries.”
In response, DA Technology explained that it is putting all its efforts into the final preparations for full-scale mass production.
