Jeong Si-chae, Former Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Passes Away at 87 Years Old
Served as the 11th, 12th, and 14th Jindo National Assembly Member
Major Contributions Including Enactment of the Island Development Promotion Act
Jeong Si-chae, former Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, passed away on the 6th at the age of 87. He was born in 1936 in Gunnae-myeon, Jindo-gun.
After passing the Higher Civil Service Examination in Administration in 1961, he served as the governor of Muan-gun in 1969, mayor of Gwangju, Jeollanam-do from 1970 to 1971, vice governor of Jeollanam-do from 1980 to 1981, first-term member of the National Assembly representing Jindo in 1981, re-elected in 1985, chairman of the National Assembly Budget and Accounts Committee from 1986 to 1987, and three-term member of the National Assembly for Jindo in 1992, where he also served as chairman of the National Assembly Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Committee.
Notably, during his tenure as chairman of the National Assembly Budget and Accounts Committee in 1986, he left a significant legacy in regional development by enacting the Island Development Promotion Act, which allowed for greater budget support for island areas compared to the mainland to increase income and improve welfare in island regions.
In 2016, residents of Ttangkkeut Village in Nam-gun, Songji-myeon, raised funds to erect a monument honoring his contributions to the designation of the Haenam Ttangkkeut National Tourist Complex.
The funeral hall is set up at Mokpo Hyosarang Funeral Hall. The funeral procession will take place at 8 a.m. on the 9th.
