Joint patrols by civil, public, and police sectors and strengthened autonomous crime prevention patrols, deployment of forest path safety guards, expansion of Safe Return Home Scouts, etc.
Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) conducted a “Civil-Government-Police Joint Patrol” on the afternoon of the 4th at 5 p.m. around Sillim Station to prevent violent crimes and alleviate residents' anxiety.
The joint patrol involved 15 participants, including the Sillim-dong Volunteer Crime Prevention Unit, the Chief of Gwanak Police Station, police officers from the Dangok District Police Substation, and Gwanak-gu officials. They focused on patrolling areas such as Byeolbitnaerimcheon Stream, Sillim-dong commercial district, and Sillim Station to inspect crime-vulnerable factors and promote the restoration of daily life.
Park Jun-hee, the mayor who participated in the patrol, said, “We have formed a dedicated team and significantly strengthened on-site patrols to ensure residents can live with peace of mind. We are implementing comprehensive measures to prevent crime. As mayor, I bear a heavy responsibility and will do my best to restore peaceful daily life to our residents.”
While making every effort to create a safe Gwanak, the district has strengthened the “Civil-Government-Police Joint Patrol” through active cooperation with the police and civilians. A total of 21 teams, consisting of the Volunteer Crime Prevention Unit, Gwanak-gu officials, and police from district substations and police boxes, with about 120 patrol members, conduct joint patrols focusing on densely populated areas by neighborhood, crime-prone areas, and CCTV blind spots.
Additionally, nighttime patrols by the Volunteer Crime Prevention Unit have been intensified by designating vulnerable areas by neighborhood, increasing patrol frequency from 12 to 16 times per month per neighborhood. Starting next year, safety equipment such as stab-resistant vests will be provided to ensure the safety of volunteer patrol members.
“Safety Keepers” have been deployed in major parks and vulnerable areas such as the Gwanaksan forest trails. Composed of 50 retired police officers, the Safety Keepers have been patrolling more than three times a day since the 4th at eight key parks and along seven routes covering 18.6 km.
The Safety Keepers patrol continuously in pairs day and night to prevent crimes in advance and create an environment where residents can use facilities with peace of mind.
The “Safe Return Home Scouts,” who assist residents’ safe return during late-night hours, are planned to expand from the current 21 members to 41. By increasing the number of operators, they will be concentrated near stations with high floating populations and usage rates, designating patrol courses centered on key locations for repeated patrols.
Starting in October, “Safety Guards” will be stationed at neighborhood community centers. They will protect visitors and staff within the centers and maintain facility security. Initially, a pilot operation will target Daehak-dong, which has many single-person households and frequent complaints, with plans to expand after analyzing project effects and conducting satisfaction surveys.
The district has reorganized the crime prevention promotion system and strengthened collaboration with related organizations. Since September 1, the “365 Life Safety Team” has been exclusively responsible for life safety tasks, and the “Local Security Council” meetings have been expanded and regularized to once per quarter.
