Announcement of the Winning Design 'SEOUL MY NOEUL' for the Han River Sunset Enjoyment Site Design Competition
The winning design for the ‘Hangang Sunset Enjoyment Spot’ to experience a unique Hangang where the sunset and the Hangang River harmonize has been announced. The winning entries proposed various plans to allow citizens strolling along the Hangang to fully enjoy the moment when the sunset colors the river, featuring a full-moon-shaped plaza connected to nearby walking trails where visitors can enjoy the Hangang at night, and a silent space where only the sounds of nature can be appreciated in contrast to surrounding noise.
Seoul City conducted the design competition for the Hangang Sunset Enjoyment Spot from July 5 to August 22 and announced the winning design on the 5th. This competition was part of the ‘Great Hangang Project,’ aiming to create an international emotional viewing spot where the city and the Hangang harmonize by utilizing the beautiful and diverse Hangang sunsets. The design competition targeted 20 sunset spots discovered through last year’s citizen photo contest.
The winning entry was titled 'SEOUL MY NOEUL.' The judges commented, “It received high scores for well reflecting the characteristics of the Hangang Sunset Enjoyment Spot, and we expect it to become a place that captures the Hangang continuously changing with time and seasons, not just the sunset.” They added, “Once established, it is expected to become a citizen space rich in emotion and active participation.”
The winner is granted the priority negotiation right for the basic and detailed design contract, and prizes totaling 16 million KRW are awarded: 8 million KRW for second place, 5 million KRW for third, and 3 million KRW for fourth. The winning design can be viewed on the ‘Project Seoul’ website.

The judging panel stated, “The Hangang Sunset Enjoyment Spot design competition was impressive with three distinctive keywords: ‘citizen participation,’ ‘natural phenomena,’ and ‘Hangang riverside.’ The effort to discover target sites began with the ‘Finding Hangang Sunset Spots Citizen Photo Contest,’ and the ‘reconfiguration’ approach allowed non-experts to participate in the design competition.” They added, “Since the space is planned along the Hangang riverside, we considered whether it was designed as a place that can be used semi-permanently, reflecting the uncertain future of the Hangang facing unpredictable climate changes.”
