Pilot Operation of Gangseo Byeolbit Space Science Center
Pilot Operation of Science Center from 29th, Official Opening Scheduled for Late October... Establishment of 'Planetarium' with 10m Dome Screen for Visual Astronomy Education
"We invite you to a starlit gathering place in the city filled with stories of stars and the universe."
Gangseo-gu, Seoul announced that it will begin a pilot operation of the 'Gangseo Starlight Space Science Museum' in Banghwa-dong starting on the 29th.
The district will enter pilot operation to improve any shortcomings and provide high-quality educational and cultural services ahead of the official opening scheduled for the end of October.
The science museum is a project initiated from residents' proposals to open an observatory in the area, built within Banghwa Neighborhood Park with a total floor area of 888.84㎡, consisting of one basement floor and two above-ground floors.
The basement floor, "Journey to Space," houses the 'Orientation Room.' The first floor, "Playing in Space," includes a program room, 'Cosmos Maru' where visitors can learn about the principles of telescopes, and the 'Solar System Station' which records the Big Bang and the life cycle of stars.
The second floor, "Feeling the Universe," features a 10-meter dome screen for visual constellation and astronomy education in the 'Planetarium,' a space-themed 'Multiverse Photo Zone,' and 'Space Fantasia,' an exhibition of astronomical and space videos (media art), inviting children into the mysterious world of the universe.
The district offers regular programs such as celestial observation and science museum tours, as well as educational programs including adult astronomy lectures, children's science experience classes, and children's astronomy and space classes.
Notably, the animation "Gilnyang-i Kitz Supermoon Adventure," featuring a stray cat character embarking on a moon exploration, "From Earth to the Universe," covering Earth and galaxy worlds, and "Phantom of the Universe: The Hunt for Dark Matter," about the mysterious cosmic entity 'dark matter,' will be screened as September programs in the planetarium, guiding visitors into the unknown universe.
Lectures, special education, and cultural programs require advance reservation through Naver Booking.
The science museum operates from Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM. On weekdays (Monday to Friday), admission tickets are issued on a first-come, first-served basis at the site, while on holidays (Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays), it operates by reservation. Those interested can make reservations on the Gangseo Starlight Space Science Museum website.
Admission is free only for this year, while educational programs are operated for a fee.
The district will conduct online and offline satisfaction surveys of visitors during the pilot operation period, make necessary improvements, and then proceed with the official opening.
