Yeongdeungpo-gu Expands Installation of No-Smoking Signs in Smoking-Vulnerable Areas Such as Schools
By September, 5 Additional No-Smoking Signs Installed at Daeyeong High School Main Gate, National Assembly Station, etc... Focused Announcements During Peak Smoking Hours for Effective Smoking Suppression
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will install 5 additional no-smoking guidance devices in smoking-vulnerable areas such as schools by September to raise awareness about smoking and create a smoke-free environment.
The no-smoking guidance devices operate in an eco-friendly way by generating their own electricity using solar power. The broadcast times and intervals can be set arbitrarily, allowing focused no-smoking announcements during peak smoking hours to effectively suppress smoking and encourage smoking cessation.
By last year, the district had installed 50 no-smoking guidance devices in blind spots for smoking enforcement such as back roads, alleys, and areas around daycare centers, as well as in areas with frequent complaints. By September this year, 5 additional devices will be installed at the main gate of Daeyeong High School, Exit 4 of National Assembly Station, the no-smoking street in front of LG Twin Towers in Yeoui-dong, the new building of Hoseong Building in Yeoui-dong, and the public parking lot of Daerim Central Market.
The no-smoking guidance devices periodically broadcast messages such as “This is a no-smoking area. A fine of 100,000 KRW will be imposed for smoking, so please refrain from smoking,” informing smokers of the no-smoking zones. In areas with a high concentration of foreigners, foreign language audio broadcasts for foreigners are also available.
Additionally, the district operates not only smoking enforcement officers but also 34 no-smoking guides composed of local residents. These no-smoking guides work in no-smoking zones such as public facilities, inspecting compliance with no-smoking facility standards and promoting no-smoking culture.
Furthermore, to protect residents’ health from secondhand smoke and encourage smokers to quit, the district actively promotes various no-smoking projects including designating no-smoking zones, operating smoking cessation clinics, and conducting no-smoking campaigns.
