Dong-A University hosted the ‘2023 International Capstone Design Camp & Contest (International Capstone Design Camp & Contest 2023)’.

Organized by Dong-A University’s Engineering Education Innovation Center and the Leading University Project for Industry-Academia-Research Cooperation (LINC3.0), the event was held recently over 7 nights and 8 days, with about 100 participants including students from Dong-A University, Kumamoto University in Japan, and National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology in Taiwan.

The international capstone design camp & contest, involving engineering students from the three universities, has been held on a rotating basis in Korea, Japan, and Taiwan since 2010. However, it was temporarily suspended for three years due to COVID-19 and was revived this year at Dong-A University thanks to the continuous exchanges and determination of the responsible professors.

Dong-A University actively utilized the Makerspace ‘IDEA Lab,’ established in 2021 in the College of Engineering Building 1, to provide more systematic maker activities for this year’s participants.

The participating students formed teams of six, with two students from each university, making a total of 10 teams competing in the contest. Each university also sent a team of 6 to 10 faculty advisors who guided the students on-site and engaged in active information sharing and support.

This year’s competition theme was ‘Idea Products for a Better Campus Life,’ and the participants created their projects over six days to submit to the contest.

Submitted projects included ▲automatic sunshade ▲smart lighting system ▲spoon dispenser ▲automatic trash can ▲disposable cup separator ▲smart air purifier ▲library noise detection and alert system ▲student cafeteria seat optimization system ▲automatic recognition fan ▲automatic umbrella dryer, among others.

The first prize was awarded to the ‘Automatic Trash Can,’ which automatically sorts trash by type. The winning team consisted of Dong-A University students Jae-Hong Park and Dong-Hyun Kim, Kumamoto University students Keita SATO and Haruka TERUMOTO, and National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology students Chieh LEE and Tzu-Yi YANG.

A representative from Dong-A University’s Engineering Education Innovation Center said, “We hope this event helped broaden international exchange experiences through international convergence capstone design projects and enhanced engineering problem-solving skills and global competencies.”

They added, “We will continue to strive to help students strengthen communication skills and leadership and foster convergent thinking through multidisciplinary team formation.”
