Haenam, the Home of Poetry, Stands Out as an Excellent Model for National Literature Museums
Danggeut Sunrye Literature Museum in Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, was selected as the Best Literature Museum in Korea in 2023.
According to the county on the 23rd, the Korea Literature Museum Association selected Haenam’s Danggeut Sunrye Literature Museum as the ‘2023 Best Literature Museum in Korea’ at the 2023 regular board meeting, recognizing it as a nationwide exemplary model for regional literary development and literature museum management.
Danggeut Sunrye Literature Museum is a public literature museum operated by Haenam-gun, where the poetic literary tradition continues from Geumnam Choe Bu through Gosan Yun Seondo to modern poets such as Lee Dong-ju, Park Seong-ryong, Kim Nam-ju, Ko Jeong-hee, Hwang Ji-woo, and Kim Jun-tae.
Since its opening, it has promoted regional literary development by hiring professional curators and has solidified its status as a national literature museum through various programs that coexist with local residents.
Over the past five years, Danggeut Sunrye Literature Museum has been selected for 17 public projects, securing a total of 613.68 million KRW in national and local government funds, and has operated customized literary projects for the region.
It has enhanced the status of Haenam’s poetic literature through diverse programs such as specialized literary education for local residents including poetry creation and recitation, nationwide academic symposiums highlighting Haenam writers who have illuminated Korean literary history, archival exhibitions, and poetry concerts.
In particular, Baekryeonjae Literary House, located next to the literature museum, has been developed as a creative space for writers, launching the first literature-specialized residency project linked with a public literature museum, gaining attention as a cradle of Korean literary creation.
At Baekryeonjae Cultural House, in addition to creative activities, unique cultural content is produced through resident writer video productions, newsletter publications, and talk concerts, raising the humanities brand value of the region through innovative and fresh attempts.
Danggeut Sunrye Literature Museum will operate various programs again this fall.
Starting next month, novelist Kim Hoon, poets Park Jun, Kim Hae-ja, and Kim Yong-taek will visit Haenam to meet readers, and major cultural events that cannot be found at other literature museums are planned in succession, including a special exhibition through collaboration between leading Korean sculptor Kang Dae-cheol and veteran writer novelist Song Gi-won.
