"Felt Psychological Burden from Bullying by Classmates
School Promised Measures but No Changes Observed"
Baek Kang-hyun (10), who became a sensation as a 'child prodigy' for solving a quadratic equation at 41 months old, announced that he has withdrawn from Seoul Science High School, where he had enrolled early this March. Baek's father, Mr. Baek, stated that the reason for his son's withdrawal was due to the school's system-focused approach and the school violence Baek experienced, sparking further controversy.
On the morning of the 21st, Baek's father revealed the facts about the school violence Baek endured and the real reasons behind his withdrawal through a YouTube channel.
Mr. Baek said the bullying began in May, and Baek was repeatedly told things like, "You being at this school is deceiving people." He also mentioned that during group projects, Baek was treated like an invisible person, with comments such as, "If Kang-hyun is here, it's like one person is missing," which caused Baek psychological distress.
The ridicule of Baek continued on online communities as well. Some students from Seoul Science High School posted abusive comments on the DC Inside 'Jjinta' gallery, such as "Baek Kang-hyun is a dumb XXXX" and "Always a useless XX."
As these incidents repeated, Mr. Baek requested a school violence committee meeting and held discussions with the involved teachers. The school suggested that for Baek to continue attending, it would be better not to report the matter to the police cyber investigation unit and persuaded Mr. Baek by saying, "We will devise special measures for group projects going forward." Consequently, the school violence committee was dismissed as if nothing had happened.

Later, still feeling burdened during group projects, Baek asked his father, "Please let me present alone during team presentations," and said, "If the school allows only that, I can somehow manage school life."
Mr. Baek then asked Baek's homeroom teacher, "He is worried that the team’s grades might suffer because of him, and he lacks confidence in participating in late-night team project preparations," inquiring if there was a way for Baek to present alone. Mr. Baek added, "He is prepared to accept any deduction in presentation grades."
However, the homeroom teacher refused, saying, "We cannot change the school's system for just one student, Kang-hyun," and the next day, Baek expressed to his father his desire to quit school.
Mr. Baek said, "I want to ask if there was ever any discussion about the promised measures for Kang-hyun at school," and revealed, "When he entered the school, Baek weighed 27kg, but now he weighs only 22kg."
He continued, "If the school only emphasizes a system that says 'if you can't endure it, leave,' why select a 10-year-old child in the first place?" and "Did they think that being smart means he could endure such trials?" He added, "If you abandon a child like this without any measures, what will happen to that child's future?"

Meanwhile, Mr. Baek does not intend to hold the students who committed school violence accountable. He said, "I received a formal apology from the perpetrators yesterday and decided to forgive them," and "I will not raise any issues against the students." He also mentioned receiving an apology email from a Seoul Science High School parent who had sent him a message asking him not to damage the school's image, saying, "I was planning to report to the police today, but now I am unsure what to do."
