Minju: "Japan's Report Demanding Early Release of Contaminated Water Must Clearly Clarify Its Authenticity"
The Democratic Party of Korea pressured the ruling party on the 19th to clearly clarify the truth regarding the report by Japan's Asahi Shimbun that the ruling party requested Japan to expedite the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
Chief Spokesperson Kwon Chil-seung stated in a briefing, "The Yoon Suk-yeol administration and the People Power Party should clearly disclose to the public whether they requested Japan to expedite the discharge of nuclear contaminated water," adding, "Although Park Gu-yeon, the First Deputy Minister of the Office for Government Policy Coordination, denied the Asahi Shimbun report yesterday, the original article clearly mentions that the request came from 'within the administration and the ruling party.'
He continued, "When asked by reporters whether the government might not know if the ruling party made such a request, Deputy Minister Park replied, 'I did not specifically mention the political sector,'" and criticized, "To what extent have they actually confirmed whether the expedited discharge request was made?" He also emphasized, "To directly refute the Asahi Shimbun report stating 'within the administration and the ruling party,' the Presidential Office, the executive branch, and the People Power Party must all be checked. If they have confirmed the facts with all parties involved, they should demand a correction from Asahi Shimbun."
