Camp David Principles Adopted at Korea-US-Japan Trilateral Summit
President Yoon Suk-yeol held a South Korea-US summit with US President Joe Biden immediately upon arriving at Camp David, the US president's private retreat, on the 18th (local time). President Yoon and President Biden are scheduled to attend the first-ever standalone South Korea-US-Japan summit thereafter.
On the morning of the same day, President Yoon met with President Biden at Camp David near Washington DC at 9:45 a.m., took a 15-minute walk together, and held the South Korea-US summit until 10:22 a.m.
Earlier, President Yoon arrived at Camp David in Maryland using the SH-3 helicopter provided by the US Marine Corps. President Yoon disembarked from the helicopter dressed in a suit without a tie. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida also arrived at Camp David that day dressed without a tie.
Accompanying President Yoon were Foreign Minister Park Jin, National Security Office Director Cho Tae-yong, Ambassador to the US Cho Hyun-dong, Senior Secretary for Public Relations Kim Eun-hye, Senior Secretary for Economic Affairs Choi Sang-mok, and First Deputy Director of the National Security Office Kim Tae-hyo.

View original imageOn the US side, Acting Chief of Protocol Rosensweig, Deputy Chief of Protocol Weber, and Camp Commander Kazni welcomed the delegation.
The US military honor guard lined up holding the Taegeukgi and the Stars and Stripes flags to greet President Yoon, who then rode in a cart driven by the US side to the meeting venue.
Subsequently, the South Korea-US-Japan leaders plan to expand trilateral cooperation in various fields including military security, economy, and global issues, and discuss their roles for freedom, peace, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

The three leaders are expected to agree on three joint documents: the 'Camp David Principles,' the 'Spirit of Camp David,' and the 'Commitment to Consult.' While the Camp David Principles serve as guidelines for South Korea-US-Japan cooperation, the Spirit of Camp David contains the vision and concrete implementation plans for trilateral cooperation. The Commitment to Consult includes joint responses to regional and global common threats occurring not only on the Korean Peninsula but worldwide.
