Naju Yeongsanpo Hongeo Street Developed as 'Namdo Food Street'
Naju City in Jeollanam-do has been selected as the final site for the ‘2023 Namdo Food Street Creation Project’ announced by Jeollanam-do, securing 500 million KRW in provincial funding for the Yeongsanpo Hongeo Street.
According to the city on the 18th, the ‘Namdo Food Street’ project has been promoted by Jeollanam-do since 2016 to revitalize the local economy by building food tourism infrastructure within the province.
Jeollanam-do selected Naju City and Yeosu City after on-site inspections and expert evaluations among 22 cities and counties that participated in this year’s contest.
The city will invest a total of 1 billion KRW, including 500 million KRW from the provincial government and 500 million KRW from the city, to officially start the Yeongsanpo Hongeo Street creation project focused on enhancing a pleasant and hygienic dining culture by the end of 2024.
Under the vision of ‘Namdo, the Land of Taste, Rediscovering Yeongsanpo Hongeo,’ the project will promote detailed tasks under three core objectives: ‘Creating a Pleasant Street,’ ‘Installing Specialized Content,’ and ‘Establishing a Culture of Courtesy.’
The city plans to install ‘pedestrian-friendly streetscape improvements,’ ‘small stages and pocket gardens,’ ‘public Wi-Fi,’ ‘specialized design street lamps,’ and ‘trick art and photo zones.’
Additionally, efforts will be made to create a user-centered pleasant dining environment through courtesy education, expert consulting on menu development, training on the use of foreign language translation apps, production of translated menus, and establishment of a waiting app.
The Yeongsanpo Hongeo Street, which will be transformed into a Namdo food street, is expected to serve as a catalyst for revitalizing the Yeongsanpo commercial district, filled not only with food but also attractions and entertainment, by linking with tourism resources such as the Yeongsanpo Lighthouse, Japanese-style brick houses, Yeongsangang River bike path, and Hwangpo sailboats.
Mayor Yoon Byung-tae said, “We expect to breathe new life into the stagnant Yeongsanpo commercial district by creating a delicious premium food street where people can experience and enjoy Yeongsanpo’s signature aged Hongeo, a representative dish of Namdo,” adding, “We will do our best to create a pleasant and friendly dining environment and a Yeongsanpo Hongeo Street that people want to visit again.”
