Yoon Departs for the U.S. to Attend the Korea-U.S.-Japan Summit Meeting
'Korea-US-Japan Cooperation' Camp David Principles and Spirit Adopted
South Korean President's Visit to US Camp David Marks First in 15 Years
President Yoon Suk-yeol departed on the 17th to attend the Korea-US-Japan summit meeting held at Camp David, the exclusive presidential retreat of the US president. This is the first time that the leaders of Korea, the US, and Japan are meeting separately for a summit rather than as part of a multilateral meeting.
On the same day, President Yoon left for the United States in the late afternoon from Seongnam Seoul Airport aboard Air Force One, the presidential aircraft. First Lady Kim Keon-hee did not accompany him to this summit.
Kim Ki-hyun, leader of the People Power Party, Yoon Jae-ok, floor leader, Lee Sang-min, Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and Jang Ho-jin, First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, saw President Yoon off. Kim Dae-gi, Chief of Staff to the President, Lee Jin-bok, Senior Secretary for Political Affairs, and Joy Sakurai, Charg? d'Affaires of the US Embassy in Korea, also came to the airport.
After shaking hands with each of them, President Yoon boarded Air Force One. Earlier, President Yoon completed all the funeral rites for his late father, the late Yoon Ki-jung, honorary professor at Yonsei University, who passed away on the 15th.
On the 17th (local time), after arriving in the United States in the late afternoon, President Yoon plans to have an internal dinner with his aides to conduct a final check on the summit preparations.
The next day, on the 18th, he will move to Camp David, the official retreat of the US president, for his first schedule, holding a Korea-US summit meeting with President Joe Biden.
This will be followed by the Korea-US-Japan summit, a luncheon among the leaders, and a Korea-Japan summit meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
At this summit, it is expected that the 'Camp David Principles' and a document called the 'Spirit of Camp David,' which includes a vision for cooperation, will be adopted.
Kim Tae-hyo, First Deputy Director of the National Security Office, revealed the names and meanings of the two outcome documents during a briefing at the Yongsan Presidential Office building in the afternoon, stating, "It has been confirmed that two documents will be adopted as a result of this summit, and there is a possibility of adopting one more additionally."
While the Camp David Principles serve as guidelines for Korea-US-Japan cooperation, the Spirit of Camp David contains the vision for trilateral cooperation and specific implementation plans. Based on shared values and norms, the three countries aim to strengthen cooperation principles for peace and prosperity in the Korean Peninsula, ASEAN, Pacific island countries, and the Indo-Pacific region, as well as globally. Key areas of cooperation include economic norms, advanced technology, climate change development, and global issues such as non-proliferation.
