Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) held a commendation ceremony for model children and youth and a World Youth Day commemorative event on the 12th to celebrate the UN World Youth Day.
The commendation ceremony was organized to boost the pride of children and youth, the future leaders, and to encourage their proper growth. About 150 people, including children, youth, and their guardians, attended the event.
The commendation recipients were selected from a total of 65 individuals recommended by principals of elementary, middle, and high schools located in Seongbuk-gu in five categories: filial piety and etiquette, overcoming difficult environments, service and cooperation, creativity, science and arts, and global leadership.
Next, to commemorate World Youth Day (annually on August 12), an event was held under the theme ‘Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World’ to reflect on the role and leadership of youth in leading the green transition era.
This year, under the slogan ‘In the Era of Green Transition, Youth Take the Lead,’ over 100 youth from Seongbuk-gu, including the ‘World Youth Day Planning Team’ and ‘Seongbuk-gu Youth Playground,’ formed the ‘Earth Defense Squad’ and performed a flash mob and other performances.
The main contents of the performance included pressing a red button to diagnose our behaviors that harm the environment, turning the ‘Youth Green Technology Development Machine’ installation that protects the climate crisis tipping point, and checking real-time changes in the tipping point through a performance on a screen showing the Earth’s temperature.
After the performance, a Ganggangsullae flash mob was held to celebrate protecting the climate crisis tipping point.
Additionally, there were go-kart rides and an exhibition of the climate crisis refugee village to raise awareness of the event’s purpose, with all installations and technology implementations led by youth.
