Seongdong-gu Publicly Recruits New Members for 'Village Representative' Residents' Autonomy Committee
Gu to Recruit a Large Number of New Committee Members, 30 to 50 per Dong, Across All 17 Dongs by September 6
Strengthening Openness and Resident Representation through Diverse Participation by Gender, Age, and Social Class to Build a Seongdong-style Resident Autonomy Committee
Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Wono) will publicly recruit resident autonomy committee members for all 17 dongs, whose terms expire simultaneously around November, with a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 50 members per dong.
The resident autonomy committee is a dong-level resident representative organization where residents directly identify problems in their neighborhoods and discuss solutions to address local issues. Seongdong-gu began piloting the Majang-dong resident autonomy committee in 2013, the first of its kind nationwide, and expanded it to all 17 dongs in 2019. Currently, 640 resident autonomy committee members are discovering various local agendas and implementing diverse projects tailored to the characteristics of each dong.
New members can apply if they are 19 years or older as of the announcement date and are either registered residents of the respective dong, employed at a workplace there, or affiliated with schools, institutions, or organizations in the area. Those interested in applying can visit their respective dong community service centers or refer to the Seongdong-gu Office website to submit an application form. The term for resident autonomy committee members is two years, with the possibility of one reappointment.
Committee members are transparently selected through a public lottery among those who have completed six hours of resident autonomy school education. The district plans to ensure a balanced composition by gender, age, and social class to secure diversity and representation among residents.
