Korea Zinc Holds Third Sustainability Management Committee Meeting This Year
Discussion on ESG Management Performance in the First Half and Strategies for the Second Half
Korea Zinc announced on the 11th that it held the 3rd Sustainable Management Committee meeting of 2023.
At the meeting held the previous day, the company reviewed the in-house ESG activities conducted in the second quarter of this year and discussed the major plans scheduled for the third quarter. Key agenda items included ▲establishing a carbon neutrality roadmap ▲publishing a responsible minerals report ▲social contribution activities. They shared major social contribution activities related to supporting vulnerable groups, community contributions, and environmental friendliness, and reviewed the main plans for social contribution activities scheduled for the second half of the year.
At this Sustainable Management Committee meeting, Korea Zinc placed greater emphasis on social contribution activities than in previous meetings. This is because the scale of social contribution activities has expanded, starting with the forest restoration project in the wildfire-affected area of Uljin and extending to the Forest of Connection project conducted in Lombok, Indonesia, and based on this, the company plans to actively expand its social contribution activities. Since its founding, Korea Zinc has carried out various social contribution activities under the policy of 'coexistence with local communities.'
Additionally, by selecting the establishment of a carbon neutrality roadmap as an agenda item, the company shared plans to simultaneously achieve RE100 and carbon neutrality by 2050 through clean energy production and introduction, as well as facility and process improvements.
They also discussed the process of publishing a responsible minerals report to strengthen supply chain management related to conflict minerals and reduce risks in raw material procurement. Other agenda items included responses to the greenhouse gas emissions trading system, cooperative safety and health partnerships with suppliers, and the establishment of a human rights management system.
Korea Zinc holds the Sustainable Management Committee meeting once per quarter. At the first meeting, they proactively discussed green metal production and became the first in the domestic non-ferrous metals industry to establish a lifecycle-based carbon footprint measurement plan. At the second meeting, they discussed supply chain issues to build capabilities to respond to countries where supply chain management is becoming increasingly important, such as the United States and the European Union.
