Chairman Hyun: "We Will Move Forward Together with Hyundai Family"
"Please continue to promote inter-Korean economic cooperation projects and make sure they succeed."
The late chairman's final message was clear. In the 20th anniversary memorial video, the late Chairman Chung Mong-hun was smiling brightly. He was a literary youth known for his talent, a caring husband, and an innovative businessman. Following the will of Honorary Chairman Chung Ju-yung, he took the position of CEO of Hyundai Electronics (the predecessor of SK Hynix) in 1984. He always emphasized that "technology is key, and technology is done by people," highlighting the importance of harmony between technology and humans. At a time when Korea was a semiconductor wasteland, he established a semiconductor factory and achieved profitability within five years of his appointment, surprising the industry. After becoming chairman of Hyundai Group in 1998, he focused on inter-Korean economic cooperation projects and played a significant role in improving inter-Korean relations. Inter-Korean economic cooperation was a dream the late chairman never let go of until the end.
On the 4th, it marked the 20th anniversary of the passing of Hyundai Group Chairman Chung Mong-hun. Hyundai Group held a memorial event and unveiled a 20th anniversary memorial monument at the family burial site in Changwoo-dong, Hanam-si, Gyeonggi-do. About 70 executives and employees, including Hyundai Group Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun and heads of affiliates, attended the event.

The inscription on the memorial monument was written by philosopher Kim Yong-ok, known as Dool, who was close to the late chairman. Mr. Kim engraved on the monument, "Carrying the cheers of the entire nation on his back, fulfilling the sacred father's legacy, growing with the passion of a literary youth, and fulfilling his duties as a professional manager until becoming chairman of Hyundai Group."
Chairwoman Hyun said, "It has been a long and arduous time, so much so that it is hard to believe it has been 20 years since he left us," and added, "I believe Honorary Chairman Chung Ju-yung and Chairman Chung Mong-hun are always watching over and supporting us, so together with our Hyundai family, we will move forward with even greater strength."
Hyundai Group will also hold a memorial photo exhibition at the group headquarters in Yeonji-dong, Seoul, and the Hyundai Elevator Chungju Plant special exhibition hall. The two-week exhibition began with a ceremony where Chairwoman Hyun placed the last puzzle piece on a large mosaic board shaped like Chairman Chung’s face.
Hyundai Group organized the exhibition into four themes: ▲ Chung Mong-hun, Hyundai’s DNA ▲ Hyundai Spirit, Unstoppable Challenge ▲ The Flow of the Times, Continuing the Hyundai Spirit ▲ Again, Hyundai. It showcased 132 photos depicting the late chairman’s life, achievements, the Hyundai spirit he envisioned, and his future vision. Notably, 34 rare personal items used by the late chairman during his lifetime, including his notebook, glasses, business cards, wristwatch, and high school graduation album, were displayed for the first time.
Additionally, Hyundai Group produced a 20th anniversary memorial video, which is being shown at the exhibition hall, on the group’s website, and on Hyundai Elevator’s official YouTube channel. The video contains the late chairman’s management philosophy emphasizing future vision and a spirit of challenge, including his voice recordings. Hyundai Group plans to produce a 126-page memorial photo book and distribute a limited number of copies to some members of the extended Hyundai family.
