A Man in His 20s Who Stabbed His Former Teacher Did Not Receive Treatment Despite Psychiatric Diagnosis
Depression Diagnosis and Hospitalization Recommendation
"Claiming Crime Due to Bad Memories in the Past"
A man in his 20s accused of breaking into a high school in Daejeon and stabbing a teacher with a weapon was found to have been previously diagnosed with mental health disorders.
According to the Daejeon Police Agency on the 5th, Mr. A, in his 20s and charged with attempted murder, was diagnosed with schizophrenia and depression at a hospital near his residence from 2021 until last year. However, despite being advised by a doctor to undergo inpatient treatment, he neither was hospitalized nor received any treatment.
A man in his 20s, Mr. A, who was arrested on charges of stabbing his former teacher in his 40s with a weapon (attempted murder), is attending a pre-trial detention hearing at the Daejeon District Court in Seo-gu, Daejeon, on the afternoon of the 5th.

Drug and alcohol rapid tests conducted on Mr. A came back negative, but the police collected his hair and urine samples for detailed analysis and requested an examination from the National Forensic Service.
During the police investigation, Mr. A claimed, "I am a psychopath. I attended the high school where the victim teacher used to work, and I committed the crime due to bad memories from that time." It was found that Mr. A did not file any criminal complaints against the teacher. It was also confirmed that the victim teacher worked at the same school during Mr. A’s high school years from 2011 to 2013, but it has not yet been determined whether the teacher was his homeroom or subject teacher.
A police official stated, "It is necessary to further verify whether Mr. A’s statements are delusions related to his mental illness or memories based on actual facts," adding, "Since it is impossible to investigate the victim, there is no objective evidence to support the perpetrator’s statements."
The Daejeon District Court will conduct a pre-arrest detention hearing (warrant review) for Mr. A this afternoon.
Mr. A is accused of entering a high school in Daedeok-gu, Daejeon, at around 9:24 a.m. the previous day and stabbing teacher Mr. B (49) multiple times in the face, chest, and arms with a weapon before fleeing. He was apprehended around 12:20 p.m. the same day near an apartment about 7 to 8 km from the school where the incident occurred.

Upon hearing that Mr. B was in class, he waited in the hallway. After the class ended, Mr. A found Mr. B washing his hands at the teachers’ office sink and attacked him with the weapon.
