Mapo-gu Expands Road Water Cleaning Until the End of This Month… Simultaneous Operation on 37 km Across 6 Zones
Using 3.5-ton Small Vehicles to Thoroughly Clean Narrow and Crowded Roads like Red Road and Gyeongui Line Forest Trail
Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) has expanded the frequency and scope of water cleaning on major arterial roads, general roads, and the Hongdae Red Road to lower urban temperatures.
The expanded water cleaning operation is being carried out until the end of this month to reduce the radiant heat from roads heated by the heatwave and to wash away fine dust. The work is concentrated from noon to 4 p.m., when the heat is most intense.
An official from the district office explained, “Water cleaning roads during the time of highest daytime temperature is known to lower the road surface temperature by 6.4 degrees Celsius and the surrounding sidewalks by 1.5 degrees Celsius,” adding, “Such water cleaning operations are effective in reducing not only the road temperature but also the surrounding temperature, thereby alleviating the urban heat island effect.”
Since the 1st of this month, the district has added 4 private water trucks to the existing 7 water trucks and increased the frequency of water cleaning from 1-2 times a day to 3-4 times a day.
The operation area has also been expanded beyond the existing sections of major arterial and general roads to include densely populated residential areas such as Hongdae Red Road and the surroundings of Gyeongui Line Forest Trail. A total of 11 water trucks are simultaneously operating across 6 zones, covering 37.2 km.
Accordingly, nine 16-ton water trucks are working on major arterial roads and main roads, including Yanghwa-ro, World Cup-ro, World Cup Buk-ro, and Mapo-daero sections.
For areas with narrow roads and heavy foot traffic, such as the Hongdae Red Road area, Yeonnam-ro to Gyeongui Line railway surroundings, Mangridan-gil to Mangwon Market, and Gongdeok Market to in front of Soe Elementary School, 3.5-ton small vehicles are being used.
