Woods 'Relief Pitcher Appearance'... "Joins PGA Tour Board of Directors"
Monahan Commissioner Appointed as Policy Board Director
PGA's Highest Decision-Making Body... 6 'Active Players' Included
The "Golf Emperor" Tiger Woods (USA) has stepped in as a relief pitcher.
Jay Monahan, Commissioner of the U.S. Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Tour, announced on the 2nd (local time), "Woods has been appointed as a director of the PGA Tour Policy Board." Woods has emerged as a troubleshooter for the PGA Tour, which has been thrown into chaos over cooperation issues with the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF). Monahan, who was secretly negotiating with PIF and faced a resignation crisis due to player backlash, raised his hands and asked Woods, who has significant influence among players, for help.
Woods said, "I am honored to represent the PGA Tour players," adding, "This is a critical time for the Tour. I will strive to act in the best interests of all Tour stakeholders, including fans, sponsors, and players." He continued, "I look forward to sitting at the table with Commissioner Monahan to make the right decisions for the future of golf that we all love."
The Policy Board is the highest decision-making body of the PGA Tour. With Woods' addition, six out of the twelve directors are current players. Existing directors include Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland), Patrick Cantlay, Charlie Hoffman, Peter Malnati, and Webb Simpson (all USA). The rest consist of five outside directors and one director from the PGA of America.

With Woods joining the Policy Board, players' influence on major PGA Tour policy decisions is expected to increase. Player directors will have full authority to approve or reject negotiations that bring significant changes to the Tour. Woods has generally shown a hostile attitude toward LIV Golf, which is funded by PIF, so it is anticipated that the PGA Tour will take a tougher stance against LIV Golf in future negotiations with PIF.
