Yoon Begins 7-Day Vacation... Turning Point for Second Half Policy 추진
President to Stay at Jeodo Presidential Villa in Gyeongnam
Exploring Directions for Implementing Key Reform Tasks
Responding to Major Issues and Attending Events
President Yoon Suk-yeol began his summer vacation on the 2nd, spending six nights and seven days on Jeodo Island in Geoje City, Gyeongnam Province. While taking a break, he plans to focus on formulating political strategies concerning current issues such as the Korea-US-Japan summit and the implementation direction of major reform tasks, making this summer vacation a turning point for his administration in the second half of the year.
According to the Presidential Office, from the 2nd to the 8th, President Yoon will stay at the presidential villa on Jeodo Island in Geoje, Gyeongnam, where he will engage in political planning, listen to public opinion, and promote consumption.
The Presidential Office explained that the president’s vacation serves not only as a time for rest but also as an opportunity to contemplate political strategies and government reform plans. Past presidents have also used their vacations to plan future political directions. A notable example is former President Kim Young-sam, who announced the Real-Name Financial Transaction System after his vacation in his first year in office in 1993.
While President Yoon raised the banner of labor reform in the first half of this year, it is expected that he will accelerate education reform after his vacation. In July last year, just two months after his inauguration, then Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Park Soon-ae proposed lowering the elementary school entrance age from six to five years old, but the plan was scrapped due to public backlash, and Park resigned, temporarily halting education reform discussions.
Recently, rather than focusing on areas with strong public opposition, various efforts have been made starting with popular areas such as expanding childcare and strengthening teachers’ authority, gaining momentum for education reform. On the 3rd of last month, President Yoon visited Neulbom School, considered a core part of the government’s education reform, promising to meet childcare demands and provide diverse educational opportunities. In line with this, Lee Ju-ho, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, announced the 'Unified Kindergarten and Childcare Management System Plan' at the Government Seoul Office, aiming to complete the 2025 'Kindergarten-Childcare Integration' by unifying the management systems divided between the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Ministry of Education.
A concrete roadmap for strengthening teachers’ authority is also expected to be presented. At the Cabinet meeting on the 1st, the day before his vacation, President Yoon instructed the enactment of a notification to protect teachers’ rights starting from the second semester of this year, stating, "Neglecting students who violate rules under the pretext of student rights is no different from neglecting criminal acts that disrupt social order under the pretext of human rights."
This reflects the voices of teachers who have suffered from student assaults and indiscriminate lawsuits by parents, following the death of a teacher working at Seo-i Elementary School in Seoul on the 18th of last month. It is also seen as a response to calls for sufficient expansion of teachers’ authority in student guidance as childcare education expands.
As discussions on the Special Act for the Space and Aviation Agency have begun in the National Assembly, concrete discussions on the establishment of the Space and Aviation Agency and the advancement of science and technology are expected to continue. Last month, during the reshuffle of vice ministers and presidential secretaries, President Yoon appointed Choi Won-ho, head of the Space and Aviation Agency Establishment Promotion Team who led the establishment of the Korea Aerospace Agency (KASA), as Secretary for Science and Technology.
President Yoon is also preparing for major upcoming issues such as the Liberation Day special pardon in mid-August and the Korea-US-Japan summit. At the Korea-US-Japan summit scheduled for the 18th at Camp David, the US president’s retreat, discussions are likely to focus on trilateral security cooperation and the regularization of the Korea-US-Japan summit. Additionally, regarding the dismantling of the cartel involved in apartment construction defects, he plans to receive progress reports from his aides regularly and personally oversee the matter.

There are also forecasts of a minor cabinet reshuffle after the vacation, with ministers of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Science and ICT expected to be replaced. The personnel action concerning the head of the Administrative City Construction Agency related to the Osong disaster, proposed by Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, is also expected to be concluded shortly after the vacation. Besides these, President Yoon plans to visit traditional markets and other livelihood sites to promote consumption and attend national events.
