Yoon Sends Nomination Request for Lee Dong-gwan as Broadcasting Commissioner to National Assembly
Hearing Likely to Be Held as Early as the Third Week of This Month
President Yoon Suk-yeol sent a request for a confirmation hearing for Lee Dong-gwan, the nominee for the new chairman of the Korea Communications Commission, to the National Assembly on the 1st.
According to the Presidential Office, President Yoon approved the request for the confirmation hearing for the nominee in the afternoon of the same day.
The Confirmation Hearing Act stipulates that the National Assembly must complete the hearing within 20 days from the date the request is submitted. It is expected that the confirmation hearing for the nominee will be held as early as the third week of this month, when the extraordinary session of the National Assembly convenes.
The nominee arrived for the first time at the office prepared near the Government Complex Gwacheon for confirmation hearing preparations on the morning of the same day.
On his way to work, the nominee told reporters, "I am a former journalist who has worked in the media industry for over 20 years, and I believe that freedom of the press is the most important value in a liberal democratic constitutional order," adding, "The media cannot and should not be controlled. However, freedom must always be accompanied by responsibility."

Regarding opposition parties' backlash against his nomination as media control, he said, "Around 2017, there was a so-called purge of deep-rooted evils, which swept like a storm and was even called a political strife of the Joseon Dynasty," and added, "If I had given any orders or taken any actions to control the media and there were clear results, do you think I could be standing here today?" he rebutted.
