Yeosu Gwangyang Port, the Only One Among Korea's Top 4 Trade Ports to Show Total Cargo Volume Increase
Q2, Maintaining No.1 Domestic Position with 49 Million Tons of Cargo Volume
Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority (President Park Seong-hyun, YGPA) announced on the 1st that Yeosu Gwangyang Port was the only major domestic port to show a 1.7% increase in total cargo volume in the second quarter of 2023, handling 66 million tons.
National trade port statistics are published divided by total cargo volume (R/T) and 20-foot container (TEU) handling scale, and Yeosu Gwangyang Port was ranked first among national ports in handling import and export cargo (49 million tons).
Looking at the types of cargo handled at Yeosu Gwangyang Port in the second quarter of 2023, petrochemicals accounted for 49.4% (35 million tons), steel-related 30.0% (22 million tons), automobiles 4.8% (290,000 units), container cargo 10.2% (434,000 TEU), and others 5.6% (5 million tons).
In particular, automobile cargo handling increased by 75.1% compared to the same period last year, processing 290,000 units, and it is expected to handle more than 1 million units this year, solidifying its position as the second-largest automobile port in Korea following Pyeongtaek Port.
President Park Seong-hyun of the authority said, “To realize the vision of Yeosu Gwangyang Port as a ‘Smart Integrated Port with the People,’ we will rapidly expand port functions linked to regional industries such as petrochemical and steel industries, continuously attract new routes, and spare no comprehensive support to make the region’s import and export logistics services more competitive.”
