48.9% of Hampyeong Residents Oppose Moving Gwangju Military Airport to Hampyeong

Hampyeong Regional Development Institute (Chairman Ok Bu-ho) recently conducted and announced a public opinion survey on the relocation of Gwangju Military Airport, which has become a contentious issue in Hampyeong County.
According to the Hampyeong Regional Development Institute on the 31st, among the areas considered as potential sites for the relocation of Gwangju Military Airport, 48.9% of Hampyeong residents opposed the relocation, 35.5% supported it, and 15.6% responded that they did not know, showing that the opposition stance was dominant beyond the margin of error.
The Hampyeong Regional Development Institute plans to continuously collect public opinion from county residents to identify hot local issues and seek policy directions for regional development.
As the first project, on July 28, a one-day public opinion survey on the relocation of Gwangju Military Airport to Hampyeong County was conducted by Korea Information Research, a professional election polling agency, targeting 534 county residents.
Recently, Jeollanam-do expressed its intention to integrate civilian and military airports into Muan International Airport as a stepping stone for a great leap in the development of the southwestern region.
Gwangju City announced that it would present various support policies, including economic assistance, for the area designated for the relocation of Gwangju Military Airport.
Accordingly, residents were asked about the pros and cons of relocating Gwangju Military Airport to Hampyeong County.
The survey results showed that 47.1% of residents believed there would be more disadvantages, while 30.9% thought there would be more advantages, reflecting views similar to the public opinion on the relocation of the military airport.
Meanwhile, 21.9% responded that they did not know.
Chosung-chul, Director of the Hampyeong Regional Development Institute, said, “We hope this survey will help understand the opinions of Hampyeong residents and respect their will to find a solution to the military airport relocation issue.”
Meanwhile, this survey was conducted on July 28 by Korea Information Research Co., Ltd., a professional election polling agency, through an automated response telephone survey (ARS) targeting 534 men and women aged 18 or older residing in Hampyeong County. The sampling error is ±4.2%p at a 95% confidence level, and the response rate was 8.6%.

The sample extraction applied cell weighting according to the population distribution by gender, age, and region based on the resident registration population announced by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety at the end of June 2023.
