Nuclear-Powered Attack Submarine Annapolis Participates in ROK-US Joint Exercises
The Republic of Korea and the United States conducted a joint anti-submarine warfare exercise.
According to military authorities on the 31st, the U.S. Navy Los Angeles (LA)-class nuclear-powered attack submarine Annapolis (SSN-760·6000t) departed Korea on the 29th and conducted training with the ROK Navy’s Aegis destroyers. Participating in this exercise were the Annapolis, the ROK Navy’s Aegis destroyer ROKS Yulgok Yi I, the submarine ROKS Lee Sun-shin, and Lynx maritime operational helicopters.
This is interpreted as a strong warning message aimed at North Korea, which has threatened to launch surprise attacks on the ROK and the U.S. using nuclear torpedoes called ‘Haeil’ or submarines. Earlier, on the 27th, North Korea held a military parade in Pyongyang marking the 70th anniversary of the Armistice Day (which North Korea claims as ‘Victory Day’), where it unveiled the nuclear torpedo ‘Haeil’ for the first time, showcasing its underwater surprise attack capabilities.

The exercise proceeded with Lynx helicopters detecting unusual underwater objects and transmitting related information to the Aegis destroyers, which then relayed this information to the ROK-U.S. submarines. The training focused on practicing procedures to search for, track, and identify a simulated North Korean submarine.
