Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, Conducts Emergency Inspection of Underground Walkways and Retaining Walls for Flood Preparedness
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, Inspects Susaek Station Underground Passage and Seongsan-ro Road Retaining Wall Site on the Afternoon of the 28th
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, operated an on-site mayor’s office on the afternoon of the 28th to inspect facilities in preparation for flooding.
This on-site inspection was conducted to prevent potential flood damage in advance, as unpredictable heavy rains have repeatedly caused flooding damage nationwide recently.
On this day, Mayor Park, along with about 20 officials including executives from the Public Safety Division, Road Improvement Division, and Water Management Division, visited the Susaek Station underground passage and Seongsan-ro road retaining wall sites to check the status of the facilities and inspect flood risk factors.
The Susaek Station underground passage, completed in 1936, is a 2-meter-high, 188-meter-long underground passage connecting Sangam-dong in Mapo District and Susaek-dong in Eunpyeong District, currently used by many people. Although a drainage pump was installed in 2013 to prevent flooding, the facility is now over 90 years old and in a deteriorated state, making urgent safety measures necessary.
Accordingly, Mayor Park conducted a thorough inspection of the entire underground passage and the Susaek Station area with related personnel, engaging in in-depth discussions on measures to ensure safety not only during the summer monsoon season but also in normal times.
After inspecting the Seongsan-ro road retaining wall, Mayor Park stated, “Fortunately, Mapo District did not suffer major damage during this monsoon, but we must never be complacent,” and instructed, “It is better to have excessive safety measures than insufficient ones. Thoroughly inspect facilities weakened by the monsoon, regularly check them, and promptly implement improvements where necessary.”

The district plans to relocate the distribution panel of the drainage pump in the Susaek Station underground passage to a space outside the flood-prone area to prevent pump operation stoppage due to flooding in August, and to secure safety in advance by repairing detached front sealants and surface repairs on the Seongsan-ro road retaining wall.
