Public Hearing on Development Plan for Areas Around Seongju THAAD Site Held... 447.5 Billion KRW Invested in 10 Projects
On the 26th, Seongju-gun, Gyeongbuk Province held a public hearing for residents at the county office auditorium to establish the "Comprehensive Development Plan for Areas Surrounding the USFK Base Due to the Operation of the Seongju THAAD Base."
At the hearing, Seongju-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, and central government agencies explained and gathered residents' opinions on the draft comprehensive development plan for the USFK base area, which includes 10 projects totaling 447.5 billion KRW: the Sosong-ri Hu Village and surrounding maintenance project (35 billion KRW), On Sede Platform creation project (41.1 billion KRW), construction of the Chojon-myeon Eoullim Complex Town (27.2 billion KRW), Seongsinwon maintenance project (49 billion KRW), construction of a bypass road to the THAAD base entrance (30 billion KRW), expansion of Local Road No. 905 (Seongju~Gimcheon) to four lanes (210 billion KRW), Wolhang Jangsan village sewage system maintenance (10 billion KRW), construction of rural road No. 204 from Chojon to Byeokjin (15 billion KRW), creation of Hangae Village marketplace street (10.2 billion KRW), and development of Chambyeol Leisure Sports Park (20 billion KRW).
A public hearing is being held for the establishment of a comprehensive development plan for areas surrounding the US Forces Korea base zones.
View original imageAn official from Seongju-gun stated, "At the hearing, opinions were expressed that investment in Sosong-ri should be increased, and anti-THAAD groups attended to oppose the construction of THAAD, among various other opinions. We expect the project to be finalized after residents' opinions are forwarded to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety via Gyeongbuk Province."
Since the THAAD deployment decision in July 2016, the 730,000㎡ site in Sosong-ri, Chojon-myeon, Seongju-gun was provided to the USFK in September 2022. Following environmental impact assessments and amendments to the USFK Base Area Act enforcement decree in June, the entire area of four towns and townships?Seongju-eup, Byeokjin-myeon, Chojon-myeon, and Wolhang-myeon?around the Seongju base was designated as the USFK base surrounding area.

Lee Byung-hwan, the mayor of Seongju-gun, said, "I offer consolation to the residents of Chojon Sosong-ri and the local community who have endured hardships due to national policy decisions, and we will strive to promptly implement the draft comprehensive development plan projects. I also ask for the active cooperation of the residents to ensure timely securing of national and provincial funds so that the projects can proceed smoothly."
