Youth nationwide and Seocho-gu residents will directly design the walking paths and riversides in Seocho-gu.
Seocho-gu (Mayor Jeon Seong-su) is holding the ‘Seocho-gu Public Design & Idea Contest’ to create an urban environment that provides convenience and enjoyment in daily life.
The district is hosting the contest to expand residents’ participation in local governance regarding public design and to discover creative public designs suitable for walking paths and riversides.
The contest theme is ‘Public Design of Rest Facilities Harmonizing with Nature in the Urban Area.’ Seocho-gu plans to install the 37 winning works and ideas along walking paths and riversides next year to create a pleasant and comfortable environment.
The contest is divided into two categories: the ‘Public Design Category’ for youth aged 19 to 39, and the ‘Public Design Idea Category’ for Seocho-gu residents.
First, the ‘Public Design Category’ for youth invites submissions of facilities or designs such as benches, tables, and pergolas that harmonize with the surrounding environment. Seven teams will be selected through the first round of judging in early September, and from September 12 to 22, mentoring will be provided by public design experts to realize the works. After mentoring, a proposal presentation and final judging will be held to select the grand prize, excellence awards, and merit awards.
The ‘Idea Category’ for residents calls for proposals related to necessary facilities or designs to create a nature-friendly and enjoyable walking path. In September, the district will conduct a document review and hold a judging committee composed of experts to select winners based on feasibility, creativity, and public value.
Seocho-gu will award a total of 18 million KRW in prize money and certificates for the selected works and ideas as follows: ▲Grand Prize (1 youth team, 3 million KRW / 1 resident team, 700,000 KRW) ▲Excellence Award (2 youth teams, 2 million KRW each / 3 resident teams, 500,000 KRW each) ▲Merit Award (4 youth teams, 1 million KRW each / 6 resident teams, 300,000 KRW each) ▲Consolation Award (10 youth teams, 200,000 KRW each / 10 resident teams, 100,000 KRW each).
The application period is from August 21 to 31, and submissions can be made through the ‘Seocho-gu Public Design & Idea Contest’ website.
The final winners will be individually notified and announced on the contest’s dedicated website on October 6.
The district is making various efforts to create a pleasant urban landscape. Since 2017, it has applied the ‘Construction Site Temporary Fence Design Manual,’ which includes composition, materials, and installation standards, to all construction sites. Additionally, works by young artists are exhibited at village bus stops to allow easy access to art nearby for everyone.
