Where is the most preferred region for domestic travel among citizens planning their summer vacation this year? According to the '2023 Summer Vacation Travel Behavior Survey' conducted last month by the Korea Transport Institute under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the most preferred travel region among citizens was found to be the East Coast.
Vacation schedules are concentrated from late July to early August, and private cars are expected to be the most used mode of transportation.

The most common planned travel dates were from July 29 to August 4, accounting for 19.3% of the total. This was followed by after August 19 at 16.6%, and July 22 to 28 at 11.5%.
The preferred travel destinations were the East Coast region (24.2%), South Coast region (19.6%), West Coast region (11.1%), and Jeju region (10.1%) in that order. Regarding transportation modes, most respondents said they would use private cars (84.7%). This was followed by air travel (6.6%), buses (4.6%), railways (3.7%), and maritime transport (0.5%).
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that reflecting these survey results, a 'Special Traffic Measures Period' will be designated for 22 days from the 25th of this month to the 15th of next month.
The ministry expects a total of 101.21 million people to travel during the measures period, averaging 4.6 million people per day (a 3.4% increase compared to last year). The average daily number of vehicles using highways is predicted to be 5.23 million (a 5.1% increase compared to last year). This is higher than the usual weekend volume (4.74 million vehicles) but lower than Fridays (5.34 million vehicles).
The measures include operating shoulder lanes, focused management of congested roads, and expanding convenience facilities such as temporary restrooms for vacationers.
Additionally, the frequency of public transportation services such as express buses, KTX trains, and flights will be increased. Support measures for travel related to the 'World Scout Jamboree' event held in Saemangeum in early next month are also included.
