Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu: "We will take the lead in preventing chronic diseases and promoting health for the vibrant and healthy lives of our residents"
Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it was selected as an outstanding local government in the ‘Community Health Promotion Strategy’ category at the Joint Local Government Performance Conference hosted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, receiving the Minister of Health and Welfare Award.
Now in its 15th year, this performance conference was organized to reward local governments that have contributed to residents’ health promotion and to share best practices.
At this conference, Yeongdeungpo-gu was highly evaluated for lowering the risk of chronic disease onset and promoting residents’ health through non-face-to-face online (ZOOM) physical activity exercise classes that are not limited by time or place.
In particular, the establishment of a mobile counseling channel enabling real-time consultations was also a key factor.
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, when outdoor activities were restricted, the district took the lead in promoting exercise and preventing obesity through non-face-to-face methods. It operated Health Reset, an online exercise class for chronic disease patients such as those with diabetes and hypertension, and a mobile exercise counseling room that prescribes 1:1 customized exercise, as well as launched a KakaoTalk counseling channel that supports real-time chat.
Additionally, one-on-one training on how to use the online platforms was provided for elderly residents unfamiliar with online tools, encouraging participation not only from office workers but also from senior citizens.
As a result, participants in the online physical activity classes saw an average body fat percentage decrease of 1.3%, demonstrating significant effectiveness.
Furthermore, the district operates a YouTube channel where videos of the day’s classes are uploaded for participants who are unable to attend the live online sessions.
Building on this award, Yeongdeungpo-gu plans to prevent diseases such as dementia, obesity, and metabolic syndrome through various health promotion projects, supporting all residents from infants to the elderly to live healthy lives.
