An incident occurred in Seoul where an elementary school teacher was subjected to indiscriminate assault by a student in the class.
According to the Seoul Teachers' Union on the 19th, on the 30th of last month, teacher A at an elementary school in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, was assaulted by a student in the class.
Teacher A had a dispute while trying to persuade a student who wanted to have physical education class instead of counseling class. The offending student struck the teacher's face and body multiple times and kicked them. The student also lifted the teacher's body and threw them to the floor, and threw scissors and a desk mirror at the teacher. These actions took place in front of the other students in the class.
Teacher A received a medical diagnosis requiring three weeks of treatment and is currently undergoing care. The student involved attends a special class due to anger management and other issues and is known to have assaulted teacher A in the past as well.

View original imageAccording to Article 15 of the "Special Act on the Improvement of Teachers' Status and Protection of Educational Activities," the head of the school must immediately take necessary measures to heal the teacher who suffered from infringement of educational activities and restore their rights if a teacher is subjected to such infringement during educational activities. However, it has been reported that teacher A has not received any measures from the school for about three weeks.
The Teachers' Rights Protection Committee plans to hold a meeting on the day to discuss the disciplinary level regarding this incident.

In response, the Seoul Teachers' Union issued a statement urging the Ministry of Education and the Metropolitan Office of Education to "not overlook the serious infringement of educational activities and actively intervene to provide thorough support for the victimized teacher," and protested, "Thoroughly intervene to ensure that the offending student is punished and that the victimized teacher and the school do not become embroiled in legal disputes during the teacher's treatment process."
