Most of the accidents involved minor spills of diesel oil and bilge water, but to prevent marine environmental damage caused by small amounts of oil film and to raise awareness through marine pollution prevention inspections, a themed inspection has been implemented to eradicate marine pollution such as the dumping of discarded fishing gear and household waste during fishing operations.
Through this themed inspection, Jeju Maritime Police will check ▲ proper disposal of waste oil, bilge water, and waste (discarded fishing gear, feces, etc.) generated from vessels ▲ proper installation and operation of pollution prevention facilities and whether illegal discharge devices such as diving pumps are installed and operating ▲ prevention activities for spill accidents caused by carelessness or damage during oil transfer operations ▲ and the disposal status of fishing waste such as discarded fishing gear and household waste.
A Jeju Maritime Police official said, "This marine pollution themed inspection targeting fishing vessels aims to raise awareness among marine workers and prevent marine pollution caused by marine waste and bilge water generated during fishing operations," adding, "We ask fishermen to voluntarily participate in preventive measures to prevent marine pollution."
