Daejeon City "Nuclear Safety Grant Tax Establishment 'Signature Campaign' Exceeds Goal"
Daejeon City’s “1 Million Residents Signature Campaign” to establish a Nuclear Safety Grant Tax exceeded its target number of signatories within 6 weeks. The signature campaign is being conducted jointly with the Nuclear Power Alliance, with the initial target of 90,000 signatories set for Daejeon.
As of the 7th, Daejeon City announced on the 11th that a total of 118,998 people (118,568 offline and 430 online) participated in the signature campaign, achieving the Nuclear Power Alliance’s allocated target of 90,000 signatories ahead of schedule.
Previously, Daejeon City established a cooperative system with autonomous districts, public institutions, government-affiliated and private organizations to simultaneously collect signatures.
To foster participation in the signature campaign, the city promoted the campaign using electronic billboards, administrative welfare centers, and public bulletin boards at public institutions (with banner installations). At the same time, they visited areas with high foot traffic such as various performances and festivals, sports stadiums, Daejeon Station, and terminals to explain the necessity and justification for establishing the Nuclear Safety Grant Tax, thereby building public consensus.
The Nuclear Power Alliance, which Daejeon City joined, consists of 23 local governments nationwide where nuclear power plants are located within their jurisdictions. The signature campaign has been ongoing since May, targeting a total of 5.03 million residents across all regions.
Yang Seung-chan, Director of the Citizen Safety Office of Daejeon City, said, “Thanks to the interest and support of citizens, Daejeon has achieved the target number of participants allocated to each region by the Nuclear Power Alliance ahead of schedule. We express our gratitude to the citizens who participated in the signature campaign to prevent unilateral sacrifices without compensation for residents around nuclear facilities.”
