Nearly 1,000 Unregistered Infants... Police Confirm 34 Deaths
1069 Reports Filed, 939 Under Investigation

View original imageThe National Police Agency's National Investigation Headquarters (NIH) announced on the 10th that as of 5 p.m. on the 7th, a total of 1,069 cases of 'unregistered newborns' had been reported to city and provincial offices nationwide, and 939 cases (11 deceased, 782 missing, 146 confirmed whereabouts) are under investigation.
Considering that the number of unregistered newborn investigations was 780 as of 2 p.m. on the 6th, this represents an increase of 159 cases (20.4%) in just one day. Additionally, the number of unregistered newborns confirmed deceased rose by 7 from the 6th, totaling 34.
Notably, among these, 11 are suspected to have been murdered, and the Southern Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency and others are investigating. Investigations for 19 cases have been closed with no charges.
In Seoul, it was confirmed that two infants died, and the Gwanak Police Station in Seoul is currently verifying the facts. Furthermore, nationwide, four cases have been confirmed as murders and have been referred to the prosecution.
The police stated that they are focusing investigative efforts on the 782 individuals whose life status remains unknown.
The ongoing investigations are distributed as follows: Seoul Police Agency with 205 cases, Southern Gyeonggi Police Agency 183 cases, Northern Gyeonggi Police Agency 85 cases, Incheon Police Agency 71 cases, South Gyeongsang Police Agency 51 cases, Busan Police Agency 47 cases, South Chungcheong Police Agency 44 cases, and North Chungcheong Police Agency 41 cases.
