However, just about two weeks after her return, in April of the same year, her younger sister Cho Hyun-min, Executive Director of Hanjin Kal (currently President of Hanjin), was involved in the widely publicized 'water cup power abuse' incident. The scandal involving verbal abuse and power harassment by the owner family spread again, drawing public criticism, and former Vice President Cho stepped down from all positions once more, partly voluntarily and partly under pressure.
In April 2019, a year later, the late Cho Yang-ho, former Chairman of the Hanjin Group, passed away. Former Vice President Cho formed a 'three-party alliance' with the private equity fund KCGI and Bando Construction to challenge her younger brother Cho Won-tae, Chairman of the Hanjin Group, in a battle for management rights but was defeated.
After failing to secure control of management, former Vice President Cho reportedly cut off contact with her siblings and ceased all external activities. She has not attended the memorial events for former Chairman Cho Yang-ho for four consecutive years, including this year.
