According to foreign media including CNN on the 29th (local time), at around 3:30 p.m. the previous day in a gender theory classroom of the Philosophy Department at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, a male graduate of the university, Giovani Villalba-Ailman (24), entered and spoke to the professor giving the lecture before drawing two large swords he was carrying and swinging them.
About 40 students in the classroom tried to restrain him by throwing chairs and other objects, but the police reported that they were unable to stop the attack.
The man continued to attack students who were trying to escape the classroom, injuring two students.
The targeted professor was Katie Pulfer, an associate professor (38) in the university’s Philosophy Department, who is in charge of counseling on gender and social justice on campus. The injured students were a male student (19) and a female student (20), making a total of three victims.
They were seriously injured and transported to the hospital, but their lives are not in danger.
Mark Crowell, chief of the Waterloo Regional Police Service, said that day, "Hate related to gender expression and gender identity appears to be the motive for the crime," and explained, "The lecture topic was an area of interest for the perpetrator and was a factor that incited the crime."
