A woman in her 30s who betrayed the benefactor who gave her a job when she was cut off from her family and had nowhere to go, embezzling nearly 600 million won and squandering it on consumption, was sentenced to prison.
According to a Yonhap News report on the 29th, the Jeju District Court Criminal Division 2 (Chief Judge Jin Jae-kyung) announced that it sentenced A (31), who was detained and tried on charges of embezzlement under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes, to three years in prison.
A is accused of embezzling 569 million won in admission fees over about 370 occasions while working as the ticket office manager at a performance hall in Jeju from May 2018 to April 12 of this year. She frequently purchased luxury bags with the embezzled money and also spent a large amount on plastic surgery procedures and entertainment expenses.
The performance hall suspected A’s embezzlement after noticing her excessive spending habits that did not match the level of a salaried employee. In response, A lied to the performance hall about the source of the funds, claiming they were "borrowed." The crime was revealed after the performance hall, which recognized the damage late, filed a complaint with the police.

The court pointed out, "The performance hall’s representative hired the defendant, who was a friend of his daughter, as an employee and even provided her with a place to stay," adding, "He treated the defendant like a daughter, as she was practically cut off from her family, but the defendant betrayed the victim who accepted her like family." The court further explained the sentencing, saying, "After being detained, the defendant sold the car purchased with the embezzled money and promised to return the money to the victim, but she has not done so and has not taken any substantial measures to restore the damage."
