Asiad Tunnel, Deokcheon-dong to Asiad Main Stadium Road 'Opening on July 1'
Deokcheon-dong Hambakbong-ro ↔ Choeup-dong Children's Grand Park, 10 Minutes Travel Time
Busan City will hold the opening ceremony for the ‘Mandeok Choeup (Asiad) Tunnel,’ which connects Deokcheon-dong in Buk-gu and Geoje-dong in Yeonje-gu, at 2 p.m. on the 30th at the Yeonje Bus Shared Garage, and the tunnel will open from 0:00 on July 1.
The opening ceremony will be attended by about 300 people, including Mayor Park Hyung-jun, the chairperson of the City Council, the chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Committee, the district heads of Buk-gu, Yeonje-gu, and Busanjin-gu, as well as local residents. The event will proceed in the order of progress report, commemorative speech, congratulatory speech, commemorative ceremony, photo session, and demonstration drive.
The newly established road between Deokcheon-dong and Asiad Main Stadium is a 4,370-meter-long road connecting Hambakbong-ro in Deokcheon-dong, Buk-gu, and World Cup-daero in Geoje-dong, Yeonje-gu. It consists of two separated one-way lanes with two lanes each, making a total of four lanes for both directions.
The Mandeok Choeup (Asiad) Tunnel is part of this road section. With its opening, traffic volume on Mandeok Tunnel No. 1 and No. 2 will be dispersed, and it will take only 10 minutes to travel from the starting point of Hambakbong-ro in Deokcheon-dong to Children’s Grand Park in Choeup-dong. The tunnel can be used without any toll fees.
This project, a long-cherished wish of Busan City, faced difficulties such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) crisis while being promoted as a private investment project in 1995 and failed to achieve results. However, after an economic feasibility analysis showed a benefit-cost ratio (B/C) of 1.13, confirming its economic viability, it was included in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s metropolitan area congestion road improvement project in January 2012 and has been promoted as a public-funded project. A total of 151 billion KRW (65 billion KRW from the national government and 86 billion KRW from the city) was invested, construction began in January 2016, and it was completed in June this year.
