Full Activation of Heatwave Measures for Vulnerable Seniors Including Strengthened Customized Senior Care Services
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will implement a “Special Protection Plan for Heatwave-Vulnerable Seniors” to ensure the healthy and safe summer of vulnerable elderly residents.
First, four safe lodgings within the district will be operated to prevent heat-related illnesses among seniors. From July to September, the following will be provided as safe lodgings: ▲Hi Seoul Youth Hostel ▲Toyoko Inn Yeongdeungpo ▲Hotel Bridge ▲Seoul Navy Hotel.
The safe lodging targets are heatwave-vulnerable groups such as low-income seniors aged 65 and over who are at risk of heat-related illnesses or have poor living conditions. When a heatwave warning is issued, applications can be made by visiting or calling the local community service center by noon on the same day. Operating hours are from 8 p.m. on the day of the heatwave warning until 8 a.m. the next day, with one room assigned per person.
Additionally, during the comprehensive heatwave countermeasure period (May 20 to September 30), a total of 189 heat relief centers will be operated (▲143 senior centers ▲18 community service centers ▲6 homeless shelters ▲2 welfare centers ▲20 small libraries).
Heat relief centers are located in easily accessible places and are equipped with air conditioners, fans, and other cooling devices. While primarily operated for seniors, they are open to all residents.
The operating hours for heat relief centers are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays for senior centers, community service centers, homeless shelters, and welfare centers, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays for small libraries.
When a heatwave warning is issued, 67 senior centers and 18 community service centers among the heat relief centers operate as extended shelters. Senior centers extend their hours until 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends and holidays, while community service centers extend their hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and holidays.
Furthermore, strict measures are in place to maintain the health and safety of seniors vulnerable to heatwaves, including ▲operation of a safety management solution (IOT) for vulnerable seniors ▲meal provision for seniors at risk of malnutrition ▲strengthening of customized senior care services ▲support for cooling supplies.
