DeSantis Pledges to Abolish Automatic Citizenship at Birth in the US
Ron DeSantis, the leading Republican presidential candidate and Governor of Florida, has pledged to abolish the policy of granting automatic citizenship to those born in the United States.
On the 26th (local time), Governor DeSantis visited Eagle Pass, Texas, and announced immigration-related pledges, including the abolition of birthright citizenship.
He stated, "Giving citizenship as a reward to the future children of illegal immigrants is a major cause of illegal immigration," and added, "We will take measures to ensure that children born in the U.S. to illegal residents cannot assume they are entitled to citizenship."
The United States currently implements birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment, granting U.S. citizenship to babies born on American soil regardless of their parents' nationality.
Governor DeSantis said, "Birthright citizenship does not align with the original intent of the 14th Amendment," and declared, "I will force the courts and Congress to resolve this failed policy."
He also stated that to prevent illegal immigration, he would strengthen enforcement by building border walls, deploying the military, and conducting large-scale detention and deportation of those with incomplete entry documents. He also indicated a willingness to allow the use of lethal force.
