Incheon City Special Judicial Police Uncover 6 Illegal Activities Including Unauthorized Shrimp Farms
The Special Judicial Police Division of Incheon City announced on the 23rd that it uncovered a total of six illegal activities through a planned investigation related to aquaculture.
As a result of crackdowns conducted over five months since January, the division detected one unauthorized shrimp farming operation and five cases of illegal seafood capture using unauthorized gill nets.
The division plans to investigate a total of 11 illegal activities, including five cases reported by Ongjin-gun and others for violations such as fishing gear registration violations, failure to mark vessel names, and exceeding the total allowable catch for blue crabs, and will forward the cases to the prosecution.
Under current law, engaging in fishing without a permit is punishable by up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won.
Additionally, capturing species subject to total allowable catch without an allocated quota is punishable by up to two years in prison or a fine of up to 20 million won, and failure to display the vessel's name or attach the vessel's registration plate is punishable by up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won.
An official from Incheon City stated, "As public distrust and concerns about seafood have recently increased, we will continue to conduct guidance and crackdowns across various fields such as fishing vessel operations, aquaculture, distribution, and origin."
