Jeonnam Province Launches Full-Scale Measures to Stabilize Distribution and Prices of Cheonil Salt
Jeonnam Province has established and begun full-scale implementation of measures to stabilize the distribution and prices of high-quality sun-dried salt produced in Jeonnam, enabling consumers to purchase it at reasonable prices and in a timely manner.
According to Jeonnam Province on the 22nd, the recent rise in sun-dried salt prices is analyzed to be due to a temporary supply delay caused by reduced production resulting from a higher number of rainy days than average in April and May this year, and increased individual consumer demand following the issue of contaminated water discharge from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan.
To quickly resolve the issue, the province plans to increase supply by extending the production period and aims to stabilize prices through improvements in distribution stages and policy development.
To increase the supply of sun-dried salt, the province will begin full-scale shipment of 120,000 tons of sun-dried salt inventory and secure sufficient newly produced salt, supporting transportation vehicles at key sales bases to facilitate prompt delivery.
Additionally, the usual production period for sun-dried salt, which typically ends at the end of September, will be extended until the end of October to increase production by approximately 40,000 tons.
For distribution improvements, the province will encourage direct transactions between individuals to reduce distribution stages and promote systematic shipment and sales through agricultural and fisheries cooperatives and large consumers to control shipment volume and prices.
Furthermore, a consumer base logistics center (FDC) will be established near metropolitan areas such as the Seoul metropolitan area to drastically improve the distribution structure.
In addition, consumer prices will be stabilized through year-round advance reservation and sales via platforms such as Namdo Market, city and county shopping malls, and online sales channels of agricultural and fisheries cooperatives in Sinan County.
The province also plans to actively propose to the government the expansion of sun-dried salt purchases, designation of hoarding items, and provision of direct payments to eco-friendly sun-dried salt producers.
