Will artificial intelligence (AI) destroy human jobs or create new ones?
There is a forecast that AI will maximize corporate productivity and contribute to the expansion of the job market. While it is highly likely to replace some existing jobs, it is expected to create new jobs through a productivity revolution.
Brad Lightcap, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of OpenAI, attended a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) event held in Cannes, France, on the 19th (local time), and said, "Every large company has employees who read and review contracts to understand sales," adding, "That job may disappear. It may not be a job of the future."
He added, "Instead of doubling computer coding using AI, companies will need more employees for other tasks," and "More people will need to be deployed for distribution, management, sales, and marketing activities."
It is expected that AI like ChatGPT may take away existing jobs but at the same time create new jobs that can increase productivity. This means that humans can enhance productivity by supervising AI’s task execution or by reallocating labor saved through AI utilization to other tasks.
Lightcap COO emphasized, "This kind of 'productivity explosion' can actually happen in reality," and "The economy is very dynamic, and people are very smart and observant. I believe they will find other things to do."
Earlier, global investment bank (IB) Goldman Sachs predicted that the development of generative AI could threaten 300 million jobs worldwide. By industry, it expected 46% of office and administrative jobs to be replaced by AI, followed by legal (44%), architecture and engineering (37%), life sciences (36%), and management and finance (35%). However, OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT that sparked the AI craze, ultimately believes that AI will trigger a productivity revolution and create new jobs.
Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb, also emphasized that AI will have a positive impact on the job market.
In a podcast interview that day, he said, "Millions of new startups will emerge thanks to AI technology," adding, "It will help boost entrepreneurship."

He particularly noted that due to AI advancements, tasks that only software engineers could perform five years ago can now be done by anyone, calling this very disruptive. Chesky CEO said, "AI is already improving the efficiency of Airbnb’s software engineers," and "Within the next six months, tools like ChatGPT will handle 30% of routine tasks." He added, "This does not necessarily mean that engineers’ jobs are at risk," and "They can save time and focus on more difficult and personalized projects."
